London Meetings, Saturday November 2nd, 2013

Speaking this month we have:

  1. John Pilkington – Pioneers and Bandits: A saunter round Patagonia.

Patagonia – it’s the stuff of dreams. John will talk about the sheepfarming pioneers who, early in the last century, made their homes in the teeth of the Roaring Forties and Furious Fifties. Patagonians today are tough survivors but also fanciful dreamers, descended from those immigrants who threw their fate to the wind. He’ll play clips of some of them talking about dangerous sea journeys, followed by efforts to set down roots against almost impossible odds. He’ll talk about Patagonia’s current battles with volcanic fallout and climate change. And he’ll reveal what really happened to two of its most notorious early settlers – Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

  2. Jane Wilson-Howarth – Nepal adventures

You heard Dr Jane Talking of poo and parasites earlier in the year, now hear about her experience of living and working in Nepal for six years, and enjoy some vicarious trekking without getting breathless. Jane Wilson-Howarth’s talk will cover the time described in her memoir A GLIMPSE OF ETERNAL SNOWS.

Jane’s website is www.wilson-howarth.com and she’s set up facebook pages for her books: A Glimpse of Eternal Snows, How to Shit Around the World and Lemurs of the Lost World.

Friday, Jan. 18; 8:00 p.m

Hi all:

Svatka Hermanek presents on The Czech Republic and Slovakia all wrapped up together again–Friday, Jan. 18; 8:00 p.m. at Old York Tower, 85 The Esplanade, as usual.

As much as we appreciate these old favourites, keep in mind that we are always looking for some “new blood” to make presentations.  Do you have a trip to present at future programs, or even an oldie?  I was shocked when my Japanese housemate had never seen a Kodak Carousel projector or slides!  See you Friday; I will be back from Cuba in time that day.    Bruce Weber 416 203-0911

P.s. Svatka is just back from teaching assignments in Uruguay and Argentina. Eduardo Barnett heads home to Argentina at the end of February this year. Bruce Weber will travel again with Horizons of Friendship to Nicaragua in February. Marilyn Weber and Mort Sider are trying to get to India late in the winter. Keitaro Arakawa, currently helping out Bruce Weber since his accident, is heading for Lima, then overland to Buenos Aires in February-March 2013 before returning to Japan in June.

Who else is where?        Bruce
