  • London Meeting, Saturday, June 1st 2019

Speaking this month we have: 1st: Tim Hanigan – On Foot through the High Atlas: Exploring Morocco’s mountains The mountain spine of northwest Africa, the High Atlas walls off the fertile coastal regions of Morocco from the vast expanse of the Sahara. Rising to 4,000 metres in places and snowbound in winter, the range is the stronghold of Morocco’s indigenous Berbers. Today traditional transhumance cultures sit uneasily alongside an expanding network of government roads, which are rapidly transforming former mule-trails into tarmac. But for now there’s still plenty of wilderness, and some very fine trekking. Tim Hannigan shares insights from his many journeys in the High Atlas, with a particular … Continue reading London Meeting, Saturday, June 1st 2019

Speaking this month we have: 1st. Charlie Walker – Following The Line In 2017, Charlie Walker began an 8-month, 8,000km triathlon along the perceived border between Europe and Asia. The journey began on the Arctic coast of Central Russia on skis hauling a sled through deep mid-winter and ended on the Bosphorus in Istanbul. The expedition involved danger from wildlife, remoteness and extremes of both hot and cold temperatures. However, Following the Line was not just an endurance feat, it was also an exploration into what it means to be Asian or European and the relevance (if any) of this supposed border in the modern world.  In this talk, Charlie will discuss what divides … Continue reading London Meeting, Saturday, February 9th 2019
