Christopher Forse – On the Road in North America

Fifty years of road trips: from the early days of Greyhound buses and hitchhiking, to over a dozen self-drives. In two parts: the first on the joys and challenges of being ‘on the road’ in North America, with journeys through the East from the Canadian border to Key West. The second part will focus on the glories of the American (and Canadian) West, its scenery, its history, and its people including encounters with fundamentalist Mormons and Native Americans. And with accompaniment of the music that accompanied me (Chris) out on the Open Road!   

Chris Forse recently spoke to Globetrotters on his Thirty Years of Travel in China. He was a resident of Hong Kong for 33 years, and is now enjoying retirement in Warwickshire where he has been chairman of a U3A for six years, while enjoying travel, self-publishing and setting his travel photographs to music!

We are trying out a different format this month, Christopher Forse will be speaking before and after the break.

• The programme starts with announcements followed by
• Part 1 of the illustrated talk for 45 to 60 minutes
• A break for 20 minutes with complimentary refreshments (tea, coffee, squash, biscuits)
• Part 2 of the illustrated talk including some time for any questions

Speaking in February we have :

• 1st: Noel Perry -Travels in a Van called Speedbump

  Noel will talk about his travels in 20 countries in his van Speedbump.

• 2nd: Jeanie Copland – Interrailing with my granddaughter.

  Jeanie travelled with Hattie, her 20 year old granddaughter, we looked at each other with amazement, did we have a plan?

  We both wanted to travel in Europe, summer 2019, why not step out together.  

  We quickly scribbled a list each of six destinations and compared notes – Budapest, Venice and Rome were hot favourites – the planning began.

1st Mary Fogarty – From the Pasha’s Palace to the desert city of the Haddou.

Mary Fogarty tells of a journey over the dramatic Tizi n’Tichka pass in the High Atlas mountains to visit the ancestral home of Thami El Glaoui, the Pasha of Marrakech and caid of the surrounding Ounila Valley.

Freak weather – snow and freezing temperatures – pervaded the journey as Mary and her friends then made their way to Ait Benhaddou, a stunning hilltop ksar (fortified village) built of red clay bricks in the kasbah way, which cleverly camouflage it against the surrounding red rock desert.

Given UNESCO World Heritage status in 1987, the ksar is probably more famous to the wider world for being the location in films such as Gladiator, Alexander and Prince of Persia. Mary and her friends were practically blown off the edge of it by biting winds, and on the return drive to Marrakech the snow descended and the mountain pass closed behind them.

2nd Rob Ainsley – How to cycle abroad without leaving Britain

Rob Ainsley takes us on a journey around the world without leaving the Britain.

Rob Ainsley is a cycling writer, but does more cycling than writing. He’s collecting international End to Ends, has ridden all Britain’s rhyming coast to coasts, and once biked to all the places in the world called ‘Bath’. He lives in York but is usually somewhere else.

The talk by Rose Moloney has unfortunatly had to be postponed.

Doors open at 14:00 GMT in London, a condition of entry is proof of vaccination or a COVID lateral flow test within 48 hours or a positive PCR within 90 days having completed any required isolation, the easiest way of showing this is with the NHS Covid Pass which lets you show your COVID-19 status in a secure way. We will be carrying out temperature checks and asking visitors to confirm they do not have any symptoms on arrival.

We would ask that anyone with symptoms or who needs to isolate participates via zoom.

Last month meeting was very successful, the hall is well ventilated and we had no cases following the meeting.

Speaking this month we have:

• Jan Parsons – From the North Cape to the Mediterranean

Following the cancellation of my travel plans for 2020 and unable to travel because of Covid I embarked on a winter project looking back at countries I’d visited but not yet covered by previous travel talks.  What emerged was a photographic and cultural journey through Western Europe.

We begin in the stunning coastal landscapes of Northern Norway, then explore a little of the remote outposts as we sail southwards, following the coast to Bergen before crossing into mainland Europe and venturing briefly into central Germany and Belgium.

Having traversed the Alps it’s time to acclimatise to warmer temperatures and a dramatic change in our surroundings as we explore the ancient pilgrimage routes via several of the Caminos in the Iberian Peninsula. The journey concludes with an interesting link!
