My friends and I were on a steep<br \/>\n walk that was just short of being able to be described as a climb &#8211;<br \/>\n fifty minutes of mud steps, not cut out but worn into the so called<br \/>\n path by travellers over the years, always at least eighteen inches in<br \/>\n height. We climbed through a rising rain forest of trees and<br \/>\n roots that<br \/>\n would make their way up to a cold pool that was fed by a lovely<br \/>\n waterfall, the highest of two that finally spilled their waters into<br \/>\n the rushing river below. The roots would act as handholds or<br \/>\n <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/globetrotters.co.uk\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/pictures\/2006\/2006-01-enews-image004.jpg\" alt=\" \" class=\"pic\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"12\" \/><br \/>\n footholds<br \/>\n as we dragged ourselves up from the 35&ordm;C at the start to a<br \/>\n comfortable 27&ordm;C at the top. This was the sort of<br \/>\n tough but<br \/>\n pleasant tramp that would be banned by Heath and Safety committees in<br \/>\n the UK, but with care, no problem for anyone at all, not even for me!<br \/>\n My companions were two lady lawyers, a female translator and a fit<br \/>\n young man, arrogant and confident, much as I must have been at his time<br \/>\n of life.\n <\/p>\n<p>\n My brother had recommended me to visit Boissucanga,<br \/>\n locally known as &#8216;Boi&#8217; and stay in a lovely rustic house owned by<br \/>\n &#8216;Jenny&#8217; not far from the beach in this yet as unspoilt resort, used by<br \/>\n &#8216;Paulistas&#8217; as a weekend escape from their large pulsating city that is<br \/>\n the driving engine not only of Brazil but also of the whole of South<br \/>\n America. Around three hours drive from Sao Paulo or about<br \/>\n nine from Rio<br \/>\n de Janeiro, Boi is to the south, just passed Ilha Bella, near Sao<br \/>\n Antonio. Boi comes after the fashionable towns of the &#8216;Costa<br \/>\n Verde&#8217;,<br \/>\n therefore much cheaper to stay, much less crowded and practically no<br \/>\n foreign tourists. There is always a place to stay, whatever<br \/>\n the size of<br \/>\n your budget &#8211; Extremely well designed 5* small Hotels (for example<br \/>\n Juquey Praia Hotel &#8211; R$ 300 [with breakfast] R$ 390 [with breakfast and<br \/>\n dinner] per day); Pousadas [Guest Houses] (various standards of<br \/>\n simplicity, from R$ 100 to R$ 200 per day) as well as Jenny&#8217;s very<br \/>\n reasonably priced rustic haven (self- contained houses at R$100 per<br \/>\n day).<br \/>\n <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/globetrotters.co.uk\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/pictures\/2006\/2006-01-enews-image005.jpg\" alt=\" \" class=\"pic\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"12\" \/>\n <\/p>\n<p>\n No crowds on very different beaches, some with waves<br \/>\n and some calm and the three Islands just offshore, make this just the<br \/>\n resort to take some time out! Not to say there is nothing to do!\n <\/p>\n<p>\n The three islands provide perfect picnic beaches, not<br \/>\n spoilt by vendors of any type. We took our own beer,<br \/>\n sandwiches, prawns<br \/>\n and fruit. We swam, went snorkelling and generally explored<br \/>\n the small<br \/>\n area but mostly wallowed in the warm clear water. A short,<br \/>\n pleasant,<br \/>\n forty minute boat ride from the mainland and costing only about<br \/>\n &#163;6-00 a head to taken there and then to be picked up again in<br \/>\n the late afternoon. Two days of my visit I spent enjoying<br \/>\n myself on<br \/>\n these relaxing three Islands.\n <\/p>\n<p>\n Boissuganga, itself a small simple town but with a bank<br \/>\n I was able to draw money out of with my plastic from its electronic<br \/>\n cashier (Bradesco Bank). A curved empty beach, calm water,<br \/>\n excellent<br \/>\n simple bars right down by the water side with marvellous fish, prawns<br \/>\n meals straight out of the sea and on to your table -The sound of the<br \/>\n sea lapping on the shore, mixing with the gentle playing of guitars at<br \/>\n the start of sunset. The splash of yellow and gold of the<br \/>\n sky,<br \/>\n reflecting off the locals as well as the water and the sound of their<br \/>\n clapping as the sun went down and day turned into night.\n <\/p>\n<p>\n This was the signal for the waterside bar (Parati), to<br \/>\n awaken and the sound of Brazilian Popular Music, to drift across the<br \/>\n moonlit beach. Brazilians love to party and as usual many of<br \/>\n them<br \/>\n joined in the singing &#8211; Dancing is something you cannot stop them doing<br \/>\n once they hear the sound of exciting music.<br \/>\n <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/globetrotters.co.uk\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/pictures\/2006\/2006-01-enews-image006.jpg\" alt=\" \" class=\"pic\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"12\" \/>\n <\/p>\n<p>\n Two of the evenings I thought I would pop out for a<br \/>\n dance and though a small town, there were always three or four places<br \/>\n one could go to dance. Music of all different types in Bistro<br \/>\n bars<br \/>\n round the town where I could dance the night away or least until the<br \/>\n early hours of the morning, after which I would stagger home, not<br \/>\n drunk, just exhausted from having such a good time with my lovely<br \/>\n companions.\n <\/p>\n<p>\n As I gathered my thoughts together, sitting on the bus<br \/>\n awaiting it to start my journey back to Rio de Janeiro. I had<br \/>\n made sure<br \/>\n it was taking the coast road and I was sitting on the seaside of the<br \/>\n coach so that I could see this lovely coast line as I made my way back<br \/>\n north up the &#8216;Costa Verde&#8217;\n <\/p>\n<p>\n Every now and again I discover or hear of a gem of a<br \/>\n place, still not exploited or spoilt and I pass them on to the<br \/>\n Globetrotters Club via the e-news or GT Magazine.
