{"id":2056,"date":"2005-11-27T23:00:00","date_gmt":"2005-11-27T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/globetrotters.co.uk\/newsletter\/2005\/11\/27\/being-careful-the-philippines\/"},"modified":"2023-12-10T11:35:29","modified_gmt":"2023-12-10T11:35:29","slug":"being-careful-the-philippines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globetrotters.co.uk\/newsletter\/being-careful-the-philippines.html","title":{"rendered":"Being Careful: the Philippines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/foreign-travel-advice\"><br \/>\n British Foreign and Commonwealth Office<\/a> advise against all<br \/>\n travel to central, southern and Western Mindanao, and the Sulu<br \/>\n archipelago including Basilan, Tawi-Tawi and Jolo, where military<br \/>\n and police operations against terrorist and rebel groups are<br \/>\n continuing and where kidnappings and bombings have taken place.\n <\/p>\n<p>\n There is a threat of kidnapping throughout the Philippines. We<br \/>\n believe that terrorists and criminal elements are continuing with<br \/>\n plans to kidnap foreign tourists from islands and coastal areas<br \/>\n in the southern Philippines &#8211; ie Mindanao and the Sulu<br \/>\n archipelago. Kidnappings from other parts of the Philippines<br \/>\n cannot be discounted. Boats travelling to and from offshore<br \/>\n islands and dive sites are possible targets.\n <\/p>\n<p>\n There is a high threat from terrorism throughout the Philippines.<br \/>\n On 28 August 2005, an explosion on board a passenger ferry in<br \/>\n Basilan, Mindanao killed 2 people and injured at least 30. On 10<br \/>\n August, two bombs exploded in Zamboanga City, western Mindanao<br \/>\n when at least 25 people were injured. In February 2005, bombs in<br \/>\n Manila and Mindanao killed at least nine people and injured over<br \/>\n 130 others.
