{"id":1860,"date":"2005-01-27T23:00:00","date_gmt":"2005-01-27T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/globetrotters.co.uk\/newsletter\/2005\/01\/27\/a-forest-flight-or-fight-by-tony-annis\/"},"modified":"2005-01-27T23:00:00","modified_gmt":"2005-01-27T23:00:00","slug":"a-forest-flight-or-fight-by-tony-annis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globetrotters.co.uk\/newsletter\/a-forest-flight-or-fight-by-tony-annis.html","title":{"rendered":"A Forest Flight or Fight by Tony\n Annis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n The day not long born &#8211; Bloody hot already, the sun<br \/>\n reflecting off the tarmac and I could already feel the weight<br \/>\n of the heat on my back and head, even through my Tilley hat.<br \/>\n The fragile looking little single-engined plane, nicknamed in<br \/>\n Brazil a &lsquo;Teko Teko&rsquo; because of its resemblance<br \/>\n in sound and vision to a child&rsquo;s model plane driven by<br \/>\n elastic bands &#8211; It stood there and shimmered and glowed in<br \/>\n the sunshine while the temperature had not yet even reached<br \/>\n 42 degrees Celsius.\n <\/p>\n<p>\n In what seemed like slow motion a fat mechanic slowly hand<br \/>\n pumped fuel into the plane&rsquo;s tank. The smell of<br \/>\n aviation fuel added itself to the tropical morning smells as<br \/>\n Adam Baines and I stood waiting nervously to load and board<br \/>\n this Teko Teko. Denis, the pilot, stood there in his<br \/>\n beautifully cut, fashionably faded Khaki. This<br \/>\n forty-something, athletic pilot exuded confidence as he<br \/>\n emerged from the cockpit holding a slender glass phial which<br \/>\n he dipped in the fuel tank. Denis looked at the yellow liquid<br \/>\n in the phial against the blue, blue sky. He slowly brought it<br \/>\n to his nose and gently sniffed it and rolled it under his<br \/>\n nose with the concentration of a wine connoisseur. In<br \/>\n Cruzeiro the pilot&rsquo;s nose makes the final decision<br \/>\n between aviation fuel and anything else that could find its<br \/>\n way into tank!\n <\/p>\n<p>\n Denis eyes turned to us, then drifted slowly over our<br \/>\n baggage. He was not in a good mood. We were last minute<br \/>\n passengers with extra weight, forcing him to remove all his<br \/>\n various boxes, destined for different jungle stops and reload<br \/>\n the craft again. On top of that we were going to pay the<br \/>\n $900-00 with travellers&rsquo; cheques instead of US dollars<br \/>\n cash. Denis looked us over. I could feel him wondering if the<br \/>\n traveller&rsquo;s cheques would bounce. He starred at these<br \/>\n two Europeans and he probably wondered if we knew what we<br \/>\n were getting into. I said, &ldquo;The traveller&rsquo;s<br \/>\n cheques are paying for the return as well as the outward<br \/>\n journey and, if they bounce; you won&rsquo;t have to bring us<br \/>\n back. Chief Biraci will vouch for us anyway&rdquo;. Right he<br \/>\n said, looking at my waistline &ldquo;Back to the cargo hanger<br \/>\n to get you weighed&rdquo;. Finally, now having to believe<br \/>\n that I really did weigh 85 Kilos, we approached the plane<br \/>\n again.\n <\/p>\n<p>\n Instrument checks done, the tower gave us clearance, chocks<br \/>\n away. Propeller whirling, he shouted above the engine in<br \/>\n English, let us sway. Mystified for a moment, then Denis<br \/>\n loudly said the Lord&rsquo;s Prayer in Portuguese and asked<br \/>\n for the Lord to watch over our journey. A moment of reality<br \/>\n came through the excitement and I prayed to whatever gods are<br \/>\n up there, please keep an eye on us. The plane slowly surged<br \/>\n forward, gathering speed, it lifted off and skimmed above the<br \/>\n trees. Cruzeiro gradually disappeared behind us. At last, the<br \/>\n adventure was to begin as we soared up, up and away.\n <\/p>\n<p>\n I saw a carpet of green under the sky blue canopy, the sea of<br \/>\n endless forest stretching as far as the eye could see to the<br \/>\n edges of the horizon. I had a feeling of how small and<br \/>\n insignificant are men in comparison to this wonder of nature.<br \/>\n We flew on, gradually leaving behind the amazing golden<br \/>\n beaches of the snaking river Jurua, so different from any<br \/>\n riverbank I had come across before in either Africa or<br \/>\n Australasia.\n <\/p>\n<p>\n I was sitting in the seat by the pilot with my camera at the<br \/>\n ready. Ready for what? I looked down at the trees so tightly<br \/>\n packed together, my imagination was running away with the<br \/>\n thought of what might happen if our one motor took sick and<br \/>\n died. Chief Biraci had said, &ldquo;There are no bad old<br \/>\n pilots in the Amazon. Bad pilots die young; and so do their<br \/>\n passengers&rdquo;. Quickly glancing round I saw Adam starring<br \/>\n out of the window, obviously moved by the sight of such<br \/>\n beauty. Not the time to spoil his dream with a possible<br \/>\n nightmare, for at that moment a rainbow appeared across the<br \/>\n jungle and made what was already wonderful, magical. I looked<br \/>\n at the Chief relaxed in his seat. I began to feel some of<br \/>\n passion he had for his home, and also began to understand how<br \/>\n he stood up at a conference in Panama and caused<br \/>\n consternation by tearing up a prepared speech while shouting,<br \/>\n &ldquo;The Yawanawa want their land back&rdquo;.\n <\/p>\n<p>\n This man, who had lived on the building sites of Rio Branco<br \/>\n and earned a pittance of money, had not only fed and clothed<br \/>\n his body, but also fed his mind and soul and to become a<br \/>\n survivor. At a time when most Indians ended up on the bottom<br \/>\n of the human scrap heap, became alcoholics and the low life<br \/>\n of the gutters of these fifth world towns. Chief Biraci had<br \/>\n educated himself, fought for Indian rights to become their<br \/>\n spokesman at the various conferences that became fashionable<br \/>\n in the 80&rsquo;s when the 1st world became aware of<br \/>\n environmental issues. This plane journey was giving Biraci a<br \/>\n small escape from his almost constant responsibility for the<br \/>\n tribe. We had been in the air now for about 75 minutes, a<br \/>\n journey that would have taken about fifteen days on foot or<br \/>\n twenty by canoe.\n <\/p>\n<p>\n Denis, the pilot, banked the plane and we moved on to another<br \/>\n compass heading. He shouted over the roar of the engine in as<br \/>\n much of a conversational tone as possible, &ldquo;Don&rsquo;t<br \/>\n forget to be back on the grass strip on the date we agreed.<br \/>\n We were cutting it fine by planning to be back just a couple<br \/>\n of days before the start of the rainy season and the plane<br \/>\n would be unable to land if the strip was waterlogged. I had<br \/>\n already had a bad landing on a previous trip on a water<br \/>\n soaked landing strip, the plane had tipped up on its nose<br \/>\n &ndash; So, I had been there, done that and had no desire to<br \/>\n repeat the excitement. &ldquo;I make two passes and then I<br \/>\n leave &#8211; That&rsquo;s the deal&rdquo;. I shouted back to the<br \/>\n pilot,&rdquo; I won&rsquo;t forget, nor will Adam we both<br \/>\n know that a seventeen day walk as the wet season starts could<br \/>\n be the end for us&rdquo;. Denis smiled,&rdquo;Could be? It<br \/>\n definitely would be&rdquo;. &ldquo;Thanks for the vote of<br \/>\n confidence&rdquo;, I shouted. We banked again and Denis said,<br \/>\n &ldquo;Sete Estrellas, time to land&rdquo;.
