Here on an island<br \/>\n11 km wide and 23 km long you&#8217;ll find nearly a thousand<br \/>\nancient Polynesian statues strewn along a powerfully<br \/>\nbeautiful coastline or littering the slopes of an extinct<br \/>\nvolcano. Getting there is easy as Easter Island can be<br \/>\nincluded in Oneworld&#8217;s round-the-world Explorer airpass,<br \/>\nand a fine selection of inexpensive places to stay and eat<br \/>\nawaits you.<\/p>\n<p>The legends of Easter Island have been recounted many<br \/>\ntimes. What&#8217;s less known is that the island&#8217;s assorted<br \/>\nwonders are easily accessible on foot from the comfort of<br \/>\nthe only settlement, Hanga Roa. Before setting out see the<br \/>\nsights, however, visit the excellent archaeological museum<br \/>\nnext to Ahu Tahai on the north side of town (the term<br \/>\n&ldquo;ahu&rdquo; refers to an ancient stone platform).<br \/>\nAside from the exhibits, the museum has maps which can help<br \/>\nyou plan your trip.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/globetrotters.co.uk\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/pictures\/\/200403enews_04.jpg\" alt=\"The razon-backed ridge on the ocean side of Rano Kau crater.\" width=\"143\" height=\"200\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\" align=\"left\" \/>The first morning after arrival, I suggest<br \/>\nyou climb Easter Island&#8217;s most spectacular volcano, Rano<br \/>\nKau, where Orongo, a major archaeological site, sits on the<br \/>\ncrater&#8217;s rim. But rather than marching straight up the main<br \/>\nroad to the crater, look for the unmarked shortcut trail<br \/>\noff a driveway to the right just past the forestry station<br \/>\nsouth of town. It takes under two hours to cover the six km<br \/>\nfrom Hanga Roa to Orongo, but bring along a picnic lunch<br \/>\nand make a day of it. (If climbing a 316-meter hill sounds<br \/>\ndaunting, you can take a taxi to the summit for around US$6<br \/>\nand easily walk back later in the day.) Once on top, you&#8217;ll<br \/>\nfind hiking down into the colourful crater presents no<br \/>\ndifficulty. It may also look easy to go right around the<br \/>\ncrater rim, but only do so if you&#8217;re a very experienced<br \/>\nhiker and have a companion along as shear 250-meter cliffs<br \/>\ndrop into the sea from the ridge.<\/p>\n<p>Another day, rise early and take a taxi to lovely<br \/>\nAnakena Beach at the end of the paved road on the north<br \/>\nside of the island (you should pay under US$10 for the 20<br \/>\nkm). A few of the famous Easter Island statues have been<br \/>\nrestored at Anakena and you could go for a swim, although<br \/>\nthe main reason you&#8217;ve come is the chance to trek back to<br \/>\nHanga Roa around the road-free northwest corner of the<br \/>\nisland. You&#8217;ll pass numerous abandoned statues lying<br \/>\nfacedown where they fell, and the only living creatures<br \/>\nyou&#8217;re unlikely to encounter are the small brown hawks<br \/>\nwhich will watch you intently from perches on nearby rocks.<br \/>\nIf you keep moving, you&#8217;ll arrive back in town in five or<br \/>\nsix hours (but take adequate food, water, and sunscreen).<br \/>\nThis is probably the finest coastal walk in the South<br \/>\nPacific.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/globetrotters.co.uk\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/pictures\/\/200403enews_02.jpg\" alt=\"Anakena Beach, starting point for the northwest coastal hike.\" width=\"200\" height=\"140\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Almost as good is the hike along the south coast,<br \/>\nalthough you&#8217;re bound to run into other tourists here as a<br \/>\npaved highway follows the shore. Begin early and catch a<br \/>\ntaxi to Rano Raraku, the stone quarry where all of the<br \/>\nisland&#8217;s statues were born. This is easily the island&#8217;s<br \/>\nmost spectacular sight with 397 statues in various stages<br \/>\nof completion lying scattered around the crater. And each<br \/>\nday large tour groups come to Rano Raraku to sightsee and<br \/>\nhave lunch. However, if you arrive before 9 am, you&#8217;ll have<br \/>\nthe site to yourself for a few hours. When you see the<br \/>\nfirst tour buses headed your way, hike down to Ahu<br \/>\nTongariki on the coast, where 15 massive statues were<br \/>\nre-erected in 1994. From here, just start walking back<br \/>\ntoward Hanga Roa (20 km) along the south coast. You&#8217;ll pass<br \/>\nmany fallen statues and enjoy some superb scenery. Whenever<br \/>\nyou get tired, simply go up onto the highway and stick out<br \/>\nyour thumb and you&#8217;ll be back in town in a jiffy.<\/p>\n<p>An outstanding 13-km walk begins at the museum and<br \/>\nfollows the west coast five km north to Ahu Tepeu. As<br \/>\nelsewhere, keep your eyes pealed for banana trees growing<br \/>\nout of the barren rocks as these often indicate caves you<br \/>\ncan explore. Inland from Ahu Tepeu is one of the island&#8217;s<br \/>\nmost photographed sites, Ahu Akivi, with seven statues<br \/>\nrestored in 1960. From here an interior farm road runs<br \/>\nstraight back to town (study the maps at the museum<br \/>\ncarefully, as you&#8217;ll go far out of your way if you choose<br \/>\nthe wrong road here).<\/p>\n<p>A shorter hike takes you up Puna Pau, a smaller crater<br \/>\nwhich provided stone for the red topknots that originally<br \/>\ncrowned the island&#8217;s statues. There&#8217;s a great view of Hanga<br \/>\nRoa from the three crosses on an adjacent hill and you can<br \/>\neasily do it all in half a day. A different walk takes you<br \/>\nright around the 3,353- meter airport runway, which crosses<br \/>\nthe island just south of town. Near the east end of the<br \/>\nrunway is Ahu Vinapu with perfectly fitted monolithic<br \/>\nstonework bearing an uncanny resemblance to similar<br \/>\nconstructions in Peru.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/globetrotters.co.uk\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/pictures\/\/200403enews_03.jpg\" alt=\"A fallen statue on Easter Island's south coast.\" width=\"200\" height=\"128\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\" align=\"left\" \/>Easter Island&#8217;s moderate climate and scant<br \/>\nvegetation make for easy cross country hiking, and you<br \/>\nwon&#8217;t find yourself blocked by fences and private property<br \/>\nsigns very often. You could also tour the island by<br \/>\nmountain bike, available from several locations at US$10 a<br \/>\nday. If you surf or scuba dive, there are many<br \/>\nopportunities here. A minimum of five days are needed to<br \/>\nsee the main sights of Easter Island, and two weeks would<br \/>\nbe far better.
