Paul has<br \/>\nled many tours into sub Saharan Africa for adventure tour<br \/>\noperators over the last few years. We started with shots of<br \/>\nVictoria Falls and White water rafting, followed by bathing<br \/>\nin a Kenyan mud spring! Paul&#8217;s passion is for the wildlife<br \/>\nof Africa and we saw some wonderful pictures of lion,<br \/>\nleopard, cheetahs and jackals. But the stars of the show<br \/>\nfor the globies audience were the mountain gorillas. Paul<br \/>\nfinished up in India with a great shot of a lion taking it<br \/>\neasy in the middle of the road.<\/p>\n<p>After the break <b>John Pilkington<\/b> gave an<br \/>\nintriguing talk on his journey up the Mekong river to its<br \/>\nsource in Tibet. We started off in the markets of Saigon,<br \/>\nnot a place for vegetarians! John followed the river&#8217;s<br \/>\ncourse but not always by travelling on it, he also used<br \/>\nlocal trucks that served as busses. As he headed north into<br \/>\nthese Buddhist lands we saw Buddhist architecture and<br \/>\nplayful orange clad monks who thought nothing of playing<br \/>\nwith a mountain gun left over from a previous war. John<br \/>\ntook an unusual route over the border into China, he<br \/>\nhitched a ride on a Chinese cargo boat delivering noodles<br \/>\nand Red Bull! When the Mekong was no longer navigable John<br \/>\ntook to jeeps and finally onto horseback to become the<br \/>\nfirst Britain to reach the source of the Mekong. (Find out<br \/>\nmore about John at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pilk.net\/lecture.mekong.html\">http:\/\/www.pilk.net\/lecture.mekong.html<\/a>)<\/p>\n<h4>Saturday 3rd January 2004 London meeting<\/h4>\n<p>Our first meeting of 2004 was a series of 4 mini talks<br \/>\ngiven by Globetrotters members. Many thanks to all those<br \/>\nwho took part, some at very short notice who made it a very<br \/>\nenjoyable afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Our first speaker was London organiser <b>Dick<br \/>\nCurtis<\/b> whose talk covered part of his &ldquo;Gap<br \/>\nyear&rdquo; from teaching. Dick slides took us through<br \/>\nIndia, beginning as most Indian journeys do in the capital<br \/>\nDelhi from where he took a train to Kashmir, all very<br \/>\nexotic, especially to someone who had not ventured beyond<br \/>\nEurope before. Dick&#8217;s wonderful photos showed us<br \/>\nhouseboats, temples and the very photogenic people. Dick<br \/>\nmet up with some other travellers and with them trekked to<br \/>\nLadakh taking in some beautiful mountain scenery and<br \/>\ntravelling from Hindu India to Buddhist Ladakh.<\/p>\n<p>Our second speaker was club Membership Secretary<br \/>\n<b>Kevin Brackley<\/b>, who took us to a now virtually<br \/>\nimpossible to reach destination, Saudi Arabia. His journey<br \/>\nstarted in conservative Riyadh, with its fortress and<br \/>\nmodern Faisal Tower, then north to Sakaka where he showed<br \/>\nus the 6000 year old standing stones in the desert. His<br \/>\ntrip then followed the old Hejaz Railway through the desert<br \/>\nto Medina. We saw beautiful red desert colours, including<br \/>\nslides of rocks carved by wind and sand and the spectacular<br \/>\nNabatean city of Maidan Saleh. At Al-Ula we saw old<br \/>\nlocomotives from the railway abandoned in the desert,<br \/>\nbefore arriving via Medina at Globe Square in cosmopolitan<br \/>\nJeddah on the Red sea.<\/p>\n<p>After the break <b>Martin Wright<\/b> showed us a glimpse<br \/>\nof his marathon cycle ride to Australia. Martin illustrated<br \/>\nhis trip with great photos and narrative, particularly of<br \/>\nsome of his ailments along the way! He showed us eastern<br \/>\nTurkey, before crossing into Iran, the photos of the tiled<br \/>\nmosques at Esfahan were superb. Martin couldn&#8217;t get a visa<br \/>\nfor Pakistan so had to back track before ending up in Nepal<br \/>\nand then via some hard uphill cycling into Tibet and Lhasa.<br \/>\nHe continued down through Indochina before crossing to<br \/>\nAustralia, where the &ldquo;Pommie on a bike&rdquo; was<br \/>\nmade very welcome, especially in places where according to<br \/>\nroad signs the population was outnumbered by sheep or<br \/>\nflies.<\/p>\n<p>Our last speaker was Globetrotters Legacy Coordinator<br \/>\n<b>Jeannie Copeland<\/b>, who showed us a trip she led in<br \/>\nIceland for Ramblers. Starting in Reykjavik with its<br \/>\ncolourful houses and lake she travelled up the west coast<br \/>\nto Akureyri, where some of her group made the boat trip to<br \/>\nthe Arctic circle island of Grimsey. Husavik on Iceland&#8217;s<br \/>\nnorth coast was the chance for the group to try whale<br \/>\nwatching. Jeannie&#8217;s photos showed the group climbing<br \/>\nmountains in a tropical for Iceland, twenty degrees, before<br \/>\ntravelling through rain to Myvatn, with its rock formations<br \/>\nsuch as Dimmuborgir and natural hot spring pools, great<br \/>\nafter a long days walking.<\/p>\n<p>After the talks, thanks to Nadia and all those who<br \/>\nbrought food and drink, we enjoyed the annual Globetrotters<br \/>\nNew Year party.<\/p>\n<h4>Future meetings<\/h4>\n<h5>Saturday 7th February<\/h5>\n<p><b>Chris Bradley<\/b> &mdash; Walking Wadi Hadramaut<br \/>\n[Yemen] &ndash; a 550 mile solo unsupported trek and first<br \/>\nwesterner and <b>Rupert Attlee<\/b> &mdash; The Trail to<br \/>\nTiticaca &#8211; a 7000 mile cycle adventure through<br \/>\nS.America<\/p>\n<h5>Saturday 6th March<\/h5>\n<p><b>Anthony Lambert<\/b> &mdash; Railways on the Wlldside<br \/>\n&ndash; travel on a selection of the World&#8217;s railways and<br \/>\n<b>Jacqui Trotter<\/b> &mdash; Travelling South America &#8211; 8<br \/>\nmonths of overland and independent travel Part II<\/p>\n<p><b><i>London meetings are held at The Church of<br \/>\nScotland, Crown Court, behind the Fortune Theatre in Covent<br \/>\nGarden at 2.30pm the first Saturday of each month. There is<br \/>\nno London meeting in August, but we will be back in<br \/>\nSeptember.
