Delta<\/b> will start two flights from JFK to Denver
\nand San Juan, Puerto Rico, in April, to Santo Domingo,
\nDominican Republic, in June, and to San Diego in July. In
\naddition, Delta will start new commuter service to
\nCharleston, Savannah and Greensboro and increase
\nfrequencies to some other Midwest cities. The regional
\nflights will be operated by Chautauqua Airlines under the
\nDelta Connection brand.<\/p>\n
Delta, which has some of the highest costs in the
\nindustry, launched a low-fare subsidiary, Song<\/b>, last
\nyear to compete with lower-cost rivals. Song will start two
\nflights from JFK to Fort Myers, Florida, in May.<\/p>\n
WIZZ Air<\/b>, the Anglo-Hungarian latest addition to
\nEurope’s growing fleet of low cost airlines, plans to start
\noperations in May 2004, to coincide with EU accession. It
\nwill start flying from its base in Katowice, southern
\nPoland, but also plans to fly out of Budapest later in May.
\nWIZZ will operate on a multibase principle and will focus
\non Central and Eastern European markets, expanding rapidly
\nto five bases.<\/p>\n
Thai Airway International’s<\/b> own low cost airline,
\nNok Air<\/b> said on Thursday it would launch in June,
\nheating up competition in Thailand’s low-cost market. Nok
\nAir — Nok means “bird” in the Thai language —
\nwould initially fly to six destinations in Thailand.
\n“The pie is very big. There’s 65 million people in
\nThailand and only five million fly” said an official.
\nTwo other discount airlines, Thai Air Asia and One-Two-Go,
\nare currently operating in Thailand with cut-price fares at
\nroughly a third of regular prices.<\/p>\n
Singapore Airlines plans to set up a low cost airline,
\nTiger Airways<\/b>, with the people we just love to hate,
\nRyanair. ValuAir also plans to launch a similar carrier
\nthis year.<\/p>\n
Uk budget airline easyJet<\/b> have announced that
\nthey are to add seven new routes, including three to
\nHungary, the CzechRepublic and Slovenia, bringing its total
\nto 135 routes. The latest expansion follows confirmation
\nlast November of a new base in Berlin, from which it would
\nfly to six countries. Passengers will be able to fly to
\nBasel in Switzerland and Ljubljana airport in Slovenia from
\nStansted in Essex. LutonAirport in Bedfordshire is to offer
\nnew flights to Budapest in Hungary. Other new routes, to
\nNaples, Ibiza, Faro and Prague will depart from
\nGatwick.<\/p>\n
Giant holiday company Thomson<\/b> is to start a new
\nlow-fare airline operating from Coventry airport at the end
\nof March 2004. The new carrier, to be called
\nThomsonfly.com<\/b>, will fly to 10 European
\ndestinations: Palma, Valencia, Rome, Naples, Nice, Malaga,
\nVenice, Pisa, Ibiza, Marseilles and Jersey. Prices will

Southwest Airlines<\/b> has launched a service that
\nallows some passengers to print their own boarding passes
\nvia the Internet before heading to the airport. The service
\nis aimed at increasing efficiency for the carrier and
\nconvenience for customers while cutting down on the work
\nload of gate agents. Southwest customers with an
\nelectronic, ticketless reservation can print their boarding
\npass for the first leg of travel on the day of travel. Once
\nat the airport, those without bags to check who printed
\ntheir own boarding passes can go directly to security
\nscreening.<\/p>\n
Silk Air<\/b>, the regional wing of Singapore
\nAirlines, is ending flights to Bangladesh after less than
\ntwo years of operation, a company official said on
\nThursday.<\/p>\n
Pacific Blue Airlines<\/b>, the New Zealand arm of
\ndiscount Australian airline Virgin Blue, announced it would
\nstart flying between Wellington and Sydney from March
\n10.<\/p>\n
Dragonair<\/b>, Hong Kong’s second-largest airline,
\nsaid it will begin flights to Tokyo in April, heating up
\ncompetition with rival Cathay Pacific Airways.<\/p>\n
Singapore Airlines<\/b> are set to enter the record
\nbooks with the world’s longest non-stop service when it
\nflies to Los Angeles on February 3. Both the New York
\nservice and the 16-hour flight to Los Angeles are targeted
\nat business travellers and will cut up to six hours from
\nits current flight time, and up to two hours for Los
\nAngeles.<\/p>\n
